This is a wedding like no other. The couple chose their ‘venue’ whilst hiking the day before the wedding, the bride wore kick-ass boots and the intimate congregation watched it all happen against nature’s endless landscape. Jessica and Bobby were married back in October in the most stunning autumnal backdrop in a wedding that is completely personal, unconventional but just as amazing as any other wedding I’ve seen.
If the frills and fuss of a wedding is not you then this wedding could inspire you to take ‘the plunge’ on a small and intimate day.
Jessica’s write up is honest and heartfelt, a truly wonderful read.
I wanted it to be a spectacular backdrop for the ceremony, so we picked that the day before, and it was amazing! I imagined my girls and I eating breakfast together and of course, staying away from Bobby until the ceremony. Then us getting ready in our separate areas. I wanted it to be sweet and stress free, but filled with giddiness and excitement. We weren’t to see each other until the moment I walked down the “aisle” and wanted us to fall in love all over again when we laid eyes on each other. That happened;) My friends and I picked out a song (that Bobby has always said reminds him of me – She is my Everything by John Prine) and played it on a laptop without him having any idea. My friend Beth said she wanted to see Bobby cry a bit when that came on, and I think he just might had. Our dear friend performed the ceremony, in which he became ordained to do, and did it with such grace. It was everything I wanted, filled with friendship and love and in the most beautiful place to Bobby and I. And after the ceremony it was perfect and as we had envisioned. We went back to the lodge, Boulder Mountain Lodge, and had a beautiful dinner, surprised with a bottle of champagne called in by our friends in Tennessee (where we live) and a cake as another surprise by our families. We stayed up until about 1 in the morning in one of the rooms dancing and celebrating and having the best time! The following morning everyone hiked to Calf Creek Falls, on a perfect day.
The Perfect Backdrop
It’s majestic qualities, not to mention we backpack there every year. It is a place that both of us hold special to our hearts and has great meaning to us. The desert landscape is beyond description as far as I can say.
Dressed to Impress
I wanted something that strayed away from the “traditional” bridal gown and I knew I wanted to wear boots! I adore fashion and the one thing I had always imagined was sheer bell sleeves. I just thought, Free People is entirely my style, western bohemian so I looked there. Sure enough, that dress was mine and ordered within minutes of seeing it!
Were there bridesmaids and if so, how did you decide on their look?
One, my best friend in the whole world. I didn’t. She is an amazing stylist and I left the ball in her court. She of course would send me pictures of her ideas, but overall we decided that boots and a bold color that matched the sky would look amazing!
Was the Groom dressed in his finery?
He was adorable. He is a boy’s boy if you know what I mean and I wanted him to be himself, as of course did he. He wore dark gray Dickies pants, Vans skate shoes and a button up J Crew oxford. He looked so handsome! His boutonniere was made from a bmx tire as well- perfect for him!
I am actually not a flowery kind of girl, but was so excited about the backdrop of the ceremony and second spot at the trailhead of Calf Creek Falls where we climbed around rocks and took additional pictures. In my mind, the backdrop was all that we needed. However, my sister in law, Jill made it even more special creating our bouquets and the guys’ great boutonnieres. She even placed flowers, succulents and pops of color (via paint chips) along the aisle as extra décor. That made me so happy and I cannot lie, I was quite excited about seeing that.
My favourite part
Everyone being together. My friends flew from Tennessee and Florida to be there with us. Not to mention drove an additional five hours from Salt Lake or Las Vegas to get to Boulder, Utah (where the lodge was located). I am smiling now as I write this thinking about it. My other favorite part was the look in Bobby’s eyes when I stepped on our altar. He was so genuine when he said how pretty I looked. It gives me goosebumps even now.
Were there any particularly memorable moments (good or bad!) that made your day or the build up to the day unique?
I have to say that I love my custom made tire garter. Bobby is a third generation tire store owner, not to mention ex-pro BMX rider, so that was beyond awesome! It did get a little stressful picking out our wedding site the day before. We had initially planned on hiking into Calf Creek Falls and getting married there, but the trailhead was crowded, and got stage fright;) So, we drove around, hiked some more and finally found our site. It was perfect though!
Words from the wise
Do whatever your heart desires. People want to get involved and though it is so sweet, it can lead your vision astray. I wore lace up boots and love that decision! Your wedding day should revolve around you and be as stress free as possible. It should be one that you think about and immediately smile, so the more positive you can make it, and that means following your heart, then the better!
Gordon Robinson was our amazing photographer. Also a thanks to Boulder Mountain Lodge, Hell’s Backbone Grill , Brigid KO for my garter, Jill Fisher for our flowers and décor, Jennifer LIpscomb for my beautiful hairstyle, and White Orchid Bridal for a beyond perfect halo
